A Heart for Mrs. Knick: A Legacy of Love & Learning

This heart is for an extraordinary woman who touched our lives in immeasurable ways. Through her teaching, her kindness, and her deep love for our community, she guided us, not just as students, but as people.

I remember how excited I was to have her as my teacher. She had once coached my sister Vicki as she prepared for a national spelling bee in Denver, and I was convinced she must be the best teacher in the world to make such an opportunity possible.
Vicki’s trip to the national competition felt monumental, and some of my fondest memories are of the two of us in the kitchen, me reading words aloud, Vicki spelling them out.

I felt a sense of purpose, of importance, and of being part of something bigger than myself. I also learned a lot of words, and was given the rare gift of quality time with my sister, who I thought hung the moon. Both of us were focused and inspired by Mrs. Knick’s study techniques and encouragement.

Even at 100, Mrs. Knick remained a source of inspiration. She championed the idea that the San Miguel Basin Forum should create a podcast dedicated to the “West End,” as we called our little corner of the world. Though the series was inspired by her, it became a gift to all of us. It was a way to hear local voices and stories and to stay connected to the rhythms of community life.

She touched each of us in unique and meaningful ways. She gave us opportunities to grow, to express ourselves, and to step into fuller versions of who we were meant to be. What amazed me most was her brilliance. She was, as my grandmother would say, sharp as a tack.

When I spoke with her on the phone last year, after 45 years, she still remembered my name, asked about my life, and even recalled the title of a children’s book I had written. She asked after my sister, and we had a lovely, warm conversation.

We lost Mrs. Knick this week, just shy of her 103rd birthday. But her legacy, the kindness, wisdom, and generosity she so freely gave, will live on in all of us.
